Driving in the dark is a mandatory course for a category B driving licence. From Grefsen, we drive out into the Oslo area where you experience varied lighting conditions, from well-lit streets at Storo and Sinsen to darker stretches towards Maridalen. You learn to assess risk, use low beam, high beam and fog lights correctly, and adapt your driving when visibility is reduced.
Yes, the night driving course is mandatory. You cannot take the practical driving test without it. The course lasts 3 hours and gives you hands-on training in driving after dark. In Oslo traffic, this is especially valuable: you learn to handle glare from oncoming cars on Ring 3 and to spot pedestrians and cyclists at poorly lit intersections.
We start at Grefsenveien 107 and drive in the areas around Grefsen, Nydalen and Kjelsas. The route includes varied road types: well-lit main roads, residential streets with weaker lighting, and stretches towards Maridalsveien where you experience genuine darkness. This gives you experience with the lighting conditions you will encounter as a driver in Oslo.
If you are under 25, you must have completed the basic traffic course before you can start practice driving. The night driving course is often included in the basic traffic course package, but can also be booked separately if you already have it. At Grefsen, we help you find the right solution based on where you are in your training.
We run night driving courses from October to March, when it gets dark early enough in the afternoon. In Oslo, conditions are good from around 4-5 PM in autumn. If you take the basic traffic course in summer, you take the night driving course in the winter term. We run several courses per week; check the calendar for available spots.
The night driving course costs 1 995 kr for 3 hours. The price includes a training car, instructor and a demonstration of reflectors and lighting. You can save by choosing a basic traffic course package that includes the night driving course. Contact us at Grefsen to hear about current offers.
Yes, we use our training cars at the Grefsen branch. You just need to show up. We have the car, reflector demonstration equipment and an instructor ready. Many students combine the night driving course with a driving lesson the same evening, which is convenient when you are already there.
